The same plugin and options that were used at the time the certificate was originally issued will be used for the renewal attempt, unless you specify other plugins or options.

Unlike command includes hooks for running commands or scripts before or after a certificate is renewed.

We recommend backing up Nginx configurations before using it (though you can also revert changes to configurations with Use standalone mode to obtain a certificate if you don’t want to use (or don’t currently have) existing server software.

The standalone plugin does not rely on any other server software running on the machine where you obtain the certificate.

The options are http-01 (which uses port 80), tls-sni-01 (port 443) and dns-01 (requiring configuration of a DNS server on port 53, though that’s often not the same machine as your webserver).
